  1. Hydrate the skin

Houttuynia cordata extract contains polysaccharides, i.e. big molecules from various sugar units (in this case it is galacturonic acid (29.4%), galactose (24.0%), rhamnose (17.2%), arabinose (13.5%), glucuronic acid (6.8%), glucose (5.3%), xylose (2.1%) and mannose (1.8%) ). Polysaccharides and sugars in skincare are excellent humectants and skin hydrators, meaning they help the skin to hold onto water.

2. Anti-bacterial

Strong antimicrobial effect against bacteria most commonly contributed to acne, Propionibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus epidermidis. These acne-causing bacteria stimulate pro-inflammatory mediators (cytokines) to initiate the inflammatory process that results in the emergence of acne on the skin. According to a study, houttuynia cordata effectively reduces pro-inflammatory mediators’ production.

3. Anti-inflammation

Calm and soothe red, irritated or inflamed skin by reducing pro-inflammatory mediators’ production.

4. Brightening

Strong antioxidant- contains polyphenolic flavonoids such as quercetin, quercitrin, hyperoside, and rutin. Sun exposure, free radicals and inflammation (i.e. acne) result in the overproduction of melanin, the major pigment responsible for hyperpigmentation such as melasma, sunspots, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation may occur. Antioxidants prevent or delay pigmentation by fighting tthe free radicals, hence obstruct the synthesis of melanin.
